Fjords

Northern Iceland is so beautiful, it feels like we are in Norway!!  Since we had a late night last night, we had a chance to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely morning.  It was once again a beautiful, sunny and calm day.  We had the morning to check out Akureyi, which features quaint shops and restaurants.  Two big cruise ships were leaving just as we drove in to town yesterday so the streets weren’t overly crowded. The downside of the day was that my camera got dropped on the sidewalk and is no longer working.  I still have my phone, so the pictures will continue to roll in.

After lunch we drove about an hour up the west side of the fjord, to the wonderful little fishing village of Siglufjordur.  It was a very scenic drive all along the water, especially with the snow capped mountains in the background. This village had a very prominent herring fishery from 1903 -1968.  After overfishing shut the industry down, the town pretty much died out until some locals decided to get to work and restore the town.  It now boasts the largest herring museum in Iceland and has been transformed into a beautiful, quaint village that draws tourists, even cruise ships!  We had a tour of the herring museum, complete with a taste of herring and Icelandic schnapps!! Then our bus driver took us on a little tour around the town before we checked in at the hotel.

We are staying in an amazing hotel, right on the harbor! We had the evening to walk around the town and to dine at one of the seaside restaurants. It is one of those places where you just can’t stop taking photos, especially because light fog cycled in and out so the scenery kept changing!  We all Feel like we could just stay here for a week!
