The East Fjord Region

We woke up to cloudy skies but it was calm!  We started off with a good laugh.  We were on the bus, ready to depart.  We were waiting for one couple when the driver started driving away.  Our Tour Director told us that he was just turning the bus around.  When we drove out of the property and started down the road we were really starting to wonder! She finally asked him and, of course, he was leaving as he thought everyone was on the bus!!!  Back we went to get the last two people!

Today we travelled all along the south shore and up along the eastern fjords.  Our first stop was for a short hike through a rock outcrop that contained more basalt columns.  It was a great place for a group picture!

For most of the morning we travelled alongside the largest glacier in Iceland and we got very near to many finger glaciers that came down to the road.  Along this area is a huge flood plain created by glacial floods when volcanoes erupt beneath the glacier. The bridges often get washed out and have to be rebuilt.

Next we stopped to see a “turf” church.  This church, built in 1884, is one of six of these churches in Iceland. Very unique!

Today we had an adventure that may have been the highlight of the trip for many people.  We stopped at a glacial lagoon.  This is a lagoon that is formed along the face of a glacier and it flows out to the ocean. The lagoon is filled with beautifully coloured icebergs that have broken off of the glacier.  We got fitted with warm and waterproof suits and life jackets and then got into two zodiac boats.  We rode around the lagoon, looking at different icebergs and hearing more about their formation. Then we went close to the face of the iceberg and then to an island where we enjoyed watching some seals.

Then, the highlight of the day happened!  The captain of the boat performed the wedding ceremony for Gunner and Helga!  It was so cute, he was such a good sport! After our zodiac ride we had time to grab a quick lunch from various food trucks at the site.

We spent the rest of the afternoon travelling along the south shore and then eventually turned to travel along the eastern fjords.  The drive was very scenic as we travelled along the coast.  Driving around fjords can take a very long time. At one point, instead of driving around an entire fjord, we diverted onto a gravel road that took us up and over the mountain.  This was a spectacular drive along a beautiful plateau that revealed waterfalls at every turn. The road was quite precarious but our driver did an amazing job!  As we travelled on this gravel road, we sang my signature travel song, “Country Roads”, led by Perla with the amazing voice!

We arrived at the hotel at 6:30, happy to be off the road as it felt like a long day. The hotel is located within a forest beside a lake, very scenic!
