A Bit of a Derailment!
I apologize for the long delay in posting! A lot has happened since I last posted!
A bit of an explanation. Carl, myself and two other ladies from the tour were planning to carry on to do a Greenland cruise departing from Reykjavik on July 2. We were required to do a PCR test on June 28, which we did. On June 29, my test came back as positive, Carl as inconclusive and the other two were negative.
So, the evening of June 29 Carl and I isolated in our room. On the morning of the 30th, another traveller tested positive. So, the three of us were transferred to the hotel in Reykjavik while the others carried on with the tour. BTW, none of us had much for symptoms, just sore throats.
The rest of the group went on a glacier expedition right from our hotel. They rode on a glacier buggy for 45 minutes, over pretty bumpy roads to reach the glacier. They suited up in warm coats and hiked through a tunnel bore into the glacier. It looks like it was an awesome experience!!
The group arrived back in Reykjavik at 5:30 and checked into the hotel. They had a fabulous farewell dinner at the restaurant across the street. This marked the end of the main tour. From here the group went in many different directions:
Four people were flying back to Saskatoon on July 1. The airline debacle has caused them some grief but hopefully they will all be home by July 2.
6 people were continuing on to do a 3 day extension to Bergen, Norway. Unfortunately, they missed their connection in Copenhagen but eventually got there, during the middle of the night, minus a few suitcases! 🤦♀️ Luckily, they have an awesome tour director there to take care of them and hopefully they will still have an amazing time!
Five of us are still isolating in hotels in Reykjavik and will be allowed to fly home in a few days. We are able to go outside so that is wonderful. The weather is still great!
The two ladies that were to continue on to Greenland had to do one more rapid test before getting on the boat. Sadly, one tested positive so they are also unable to go on the Greenland cruise. The four of us will be able to rebook to do this same trip in a year from now.
So, in summary. The Iceland tour portion was absolutely amazing! The scenery and experiences were breathtaking and we were blessed with unbelievably great weather!!! Unfortunately, we didn’t get the ending that we had hoped for. However, these are the chances that we take these days if we chose to travel. I really believe that most of the group would still do it all over again. I feel blessed to have travelled with such an amazing group of people that have stayed positive and made the best of the bumps in the road. We were blessed with one of the best tour directors in the industry. I feel confident that, down the road, the positive memories will out shadow the negative memories. Life is all about the adventure, it is not always positive but it is always worth it!!!
I’ve included some pictures from around Reykjavik, it is a wonderful city! The weather was perfect and we were free to walk around outside with our masks on!
Thanks for following!
